Gareth Barber, Managing Director of BG Energy Systems, comments on the Autumn Budget:
“We welcome the Chancellor’s ongoing commitment to the regions with the creation of the £1.7bn Transforming Cities Fund. The hope is that this will bring much needed infrastructure support to the Northern Powerhouse, particularly to those dependent on the TransPennine railway and the forthcoming HS2.”
We also welcome the continued commitment to apprenticeships, skills and training. It is crucial that this country continues to invest in its people, just as we in business do. We are glad this government has formed a partnership with the CBI and TUC on a National Retraining Scheme to boost digital and construction skills; and is looking at building partnerships with business to establish a National Centre for Computing.
“However we are disappointed that despite making ‘green noises’ about support for Electric Vehicles, the Chancellor chose not to tackle the UK’s broader commitment to the aims of the Paris Agreement – reducing carbon, supporting renewable energy and encouraging energy efficiencies. This last which could be achieved across the NHS, education and government estates throughout the UK, unlocking more money for front-line services.”
