Those who know BGES, will know that learning and development is a huge part of our company culture. We never take a “one size fits all” approach – it’s important to us that each team member is given opportunities to shape their own future within the business.
To mark Learning At Work Week, we caught up with some of our brilliant year 1 and 2 apprentices, to find out how they’re developing diverse career pathways that help them to thrive.
Bailey – Apprentice Electrician
“I’m 10 months into my apprenticeship with BGES, and I have learned so much. I enjoy taking the theory I learned in my A levels, and applying them to the practical side of the work. With BGES you get good exposure to a variety of things early on, including the chance to go out and work in the field. It’s been really insightful, and I’ve discovered that I most enjoy working on the electrical panels in the workshop. I feel incredibly supported by the team, and grateful for the chance to develop my particular interests alongside time-served engineers.”
Josh – Apprentice Commissioning Engineer
“I am really enjoying my time at BGES, and it’s really rewarding to be part of the team delivering some of our flagship projects. I’ve also enjoyed being given the responsibility to undertake my own tasks on projects and learning new skills as I continue to develop through the business.
It’s such a varied role – and on a daily basis, I have been working on different projects, in different cities with different teams. I have enjoyed learning the role of a commissioning engineer and what the daily expectations and challenges in the business are.
As well as my apprenticeship, I’ve benefitted from additional training courses, funded by BGES, that help me develop in my role. In the future I see myself as a fully–fledged commissioning engineer and part of the management team at BGES.”
Marshall – Apprentice Control Engineer
“I’m 8 months into my apprenticeship, and I’m working with the Service division to fix and diagnose issues over remote connection, oftentimes with HVAC systems. I picked up an interest in the area from doing engineering and IT for my A levels. It’s great to be making a difference – applying my skills to real-world situations that benefit building operators and their occupants.
I hope to progress into a service engineer role in the future with BGES. I’ve always wanted to work in a field with engineering and electronics – so it’s an ideal route for me.”
Dominic – Electrical Installer Apprentice
“I’m based out of BGES Group’s Sheffield HQ, and I’m in the second year of my apprenticeship, with two more to go. I love being on site and I was drawn to BGES because I was looking for a career that was more ‘hands on.’
Over the course of my work experience, I feel I’ve become more confident working alone and my communication skills have improved. Worksite changes also mean I meet more people, and adapt to different management styles and workflows.
My co-workers are very friendly, supportive, and helpful. I love working with people – and I’d like that to be a key part of my role as I progress at BGES. In the future – I’d like to explore working in commissioning.”
What’s different about a BGES Group apprenticeship?
At BGES, we offer complete in-house, end to end delivery of building management solutions.
It means that apprentices get exposure to different functions of the business – from the design and manufacture stage, right through to install, commissioning and ongoing service and maintenance. We use the very latest technologies, and work in a wide range of sectors and building types.
The result is that we’re able to give apprentices a diverse range of opportunities. And, as they progress through their training and identify the areas that suit them, we support them to follow their preferred route.
